TheSan Ildefonsoholds a singular place in Spanish naval history: it was the prototype for a series of eight ships of the line that transformed the construction of warships at the end of the 18th century. Its operational life ended at Trafalgar, but its trace—and its flag—remain in leading British collections.
A design that set a standard
TheSan Ildefonsowas the work of naval engineer José Joaquín Romero Fernández de Landa, responsible for the technological programme that gave rise to the class known as the «Ildefonsina». That series comprised eight ships of the line, all designed by Romero Fernández de Landa, and theSan Ildefonsowas the first and the reference model for the rest.
The ship was launched at the Cartagena Arsenal in 1785. With its 74 guns, it fit within the line of two-decker ships that dominated European navies at the time, but with a rationalised design that reduced costs and improved seakeeping. The original plans, preserved in the arsenal’s records, attest to the scope of Romero Fernández de Landa’s programme.
The innovations of the Ildefonsino system
Romero Fernández de Landa’s design incorporated the lessons of earlier systems—those of Gaztañeta and Jorge Juan—and brought them to a point of balance. Two features defined it. The first was the moderate sheer: a reduced deck curvature that improved the artillery capability of the upper batteries, by allowing the guns to be mounted closer to the waterline without losing stability. The second was the continuous batteries: unbroken gun decks that maximised the broadside, the simultaneous firing of all guns on one side.
The gestation of the system was meticulous. The documentation records that the project began with a draft of letters dated the same day, sent to the Director General of the Navy and to the three Captain Generals of the Departments, with an attached document on which comments were requested. The correspondence of the period also reveals an intense technical debate involving figures such as Mazarredo, called upon to rule on the design. That consultation process, unusual for the time, explains why the series came to fruition.
Measuring firepower: tons, quintals and pounds
The technical documentation of the 18th century insists on a distinction that is lost today: the ton of burden was not a weight, but a reference volume that determined everything from the minimum crew to the number of guns on each deck. Artillery, by contrast, was measured in quintals. A 24-pounder gun weighed approximately 45 quintals, about 2,070 kilos, and ammunition was recorded in Castilian pounds. Calculating the broadside of a 74-gun ship thus became an exercise in firepower that was read from the arsenal: by adding up the calibres and projectile weights, the destructive capacity of each battery was obtained. TheSan Ildefonso, with its two gun decks, was the practical expression of that calculation.
From the Spanish Navy to the Royal Navy
The fate of theSan Ildefonsochanged on 21 October 1805, when it was captured by the Royal Navy during the Battle of Trafalgar. After being taken as a prize, it was renamed HMSSan Ildefonsoand added to the British navy’s list. Its service under a new flag was limited: in 1816 it was decommissioned and assigned as a provisions storehouse in Portsmouth, a utilitarian end that contrasts with its origins as a ship of the line.
The British documentation on prizes and captured ships, preserved at The National Archives, allows the administrative trail of the vessel to be followed from its capture to its retirement. The voyage of theSan Ildefonsodid not end in Portsmouth: its flag, the largest captured from Spain at Trafalgar, survived the breaking-up and is preserved to this day.
The bodyguard of the Príncipe de Asturias
The role of theSan Ildefonsoat Trafalgar was more significant than its final fate suggests. During the battle it became the indispensable bodyguard of the giganticPríncipe de Asturias, Gravina’s 112-gun ship and flagship of the Spanish squadron. In defending that ship, theSan Ildefonsosuffered terrible fire: its task was to cover the admiral’s ship while the latter, severely damaged, tried to break through the British encirclement. That protection, at the cost of absorbing the brunt of the enemy’s punishment, explains both its heavy damage and its capture at the end of the day, when no manoeuvring capability remained. The combined fleet lost most of its ships at Trafalgar; theSan Ildefonsowas one of the most valuable prizes in the British haul.
The mobilisation of 1805: from Cartagena to Cádiz
TheSan Ildefonsodid not reach Trafalgar from just any port: it was part of the great naval concentration ordered in the spring of 1805, when the threat of an invasion of England required gathering all available forces. The orders from the Cartagena Department sent to Cádiz the 74-gun shipsSt Paul,Ángel de la Guarda,San Francisco de Asís,San Ildefonso,Firme,Atlante,GloriosoandGuerrero, together with the 64-gunSan Fulgencioand the frigatesSanta Teresa,Florentina,Perla,MahonesaandSoledad.
At Cádiz, the 114-gunConde de Reglaand the 80-gunRayowere already awaiting them, along with the 64-gun shipsAstuto,San Ramón,CastillaandSan Pedro de Alcántara, and the frigatesSanta Bárbara,Santa Dorotea,MercedesandRosario. That concentration, the largest of the period, was the crucible from which the combined Franco-Spanish fleet emerged. TheSan Ildefonsoarrived at the rendezvous with twenty years of service behind it, a veteran of the class it had itself inaugurated.
The years of service: from ’85 to the war with the Convention
Between its launch in 1785 and the mobilisation of 1805, theSan Ildefonsoaccumulated a career that was unspectacular but steady. Contemporary documentation places it in peninsular and Atlantic waters, in convoys and training squadrons, with interruptions for careening and major repairs. Its status as a ship of the Ildefonsina class—the reference design of Romero Fernández de Landa—meant it was preferentially assigned to training squadrons and missions requiring reliable rather than fast vessels. When Spain entered the war against revolutionary France in 1793 and, years later, signed the Treaty of San Ildefonso in 1796, which allied it with the Republic, theSan Ildefonsomoved from one conflict to the other without any change of setting: the western Mediterranean and the Andalusian Atlantic coast were its natural habitat for two decades.
The series that marked an era
The Ildefonsina class was not just another family of ships: it was the last great Spanish naval construction programme of the Ancien Régime. The eight vessels of the series, conceived under the direction of Romero Fernández de Landa—whose career at the head of naval engineering spanned from 1784 to 1805, according to contemporary tables—incorporated French influence filtered through Spanish experience: reduced sheer, continuous gun decks and a standardisation that lowered costs and simplified maintenance in the arsenals of Cartagena, Ferrol and Havana.
Copper sheathing: the silent innovation
The documentation of Juan-García Aguado records that in August 1783, two years before the launch of theSan Ildefonso, 37 ships of the Navy had already been copper-sheathed. That seemingly minor innovation transformed the speed and endurance of ships by preventing the accumulation of marine organisms on the hull. TheSan Ildefonso, built with that technique from the outset, inherited an advantage that its predecessors of the 1750s and 1760s had not possessed: the ability to maintain cruising speed for weeks without the need for careening. That silent improvement, together with Romero Fernández de Landa’s rationalised design, explains why the Ildefonsina series was the backbone of the Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, and why its ships—theSan Ildefonsoitself, theSan Telmo, theMontañés—appear time and again in the reports of the great squadrons of the period.
The flag that survived Trafalgar
The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich displays the largest Spanish flag captured at Trafalgar: 14.5 metres long by 10 metres wide. That ensign belonged to theSan Ildefonsoand is also associated with Nelson’s funeral, which makes it a piece with a double symbolic value: war trophy and funerary testimony of the British admiral.
The conservation of that flag in the National Maritime Museum is a fact documented by the institution itself. Its exceptional size and provenance have made it one of the most recognisable pieces in the museum’s Trafalgar collection.
The story of theSan Ildefonsosums up the evolution of Spanish naval construction between the Enlightenment and the Napoleonic Wars: a design of its own that set the standard, a decisive capture and an administrative end in Portsmouth. Its flag, preserved at Greenwich, remains the most visible material testimony of that 74-gun ship born in Cartagena.
