The industrial heart of the Navy

Ferrol was, during the 18th century, the most modern and ambitious arsenal of the Spanish Navy. Its construction, begun in 1726, transformed a small fishing village into the largest industrial complex in enlightened Spain. The Ferrol Arsenal, designed by Francisco Montaigu and expanded by Jorge Próspero de Verboom, had covered stands, careening docks, artillery foundries, rigging workshops, wood warehouses and a school for naval engineers.

The importance of Ferrol lay not only in its construction capacity—some of the best ships of the Navy were launched there, such as theSaint John Nepomucenoand theHighlander— but also in its strategic function as the base of the North Atlantic fleet. Its location on the Galician coast, in a deep and sheltered estuary, made it the ideal base to project naval power towards the Atlantic and protect trade routes with America.
